The Witch Monkey

I am excited to spend the summer here in my country with my husband helping to build homes for the less fortunate. I am also thrilled to spend time with my close knit family. Distance has not been able to destroy the family ties. My husband and I will reside in a cottage set in the countryside. It is very secluded but my family owns many acres in the countryside, even if their not immediately near, their close enough to call if we need the company. The serenity of the country, the colorful sunsets, the breeze in the high grass all welcome as we unpack for a wonderful summer.

My family surprised us with a welcome party in the cottage. My aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and other extended family members were so happy to see us. In particular my beloved cousin Minerva whom I’ve kept contact through all these years. We FaceTime on a weekly basis and to finally be there with her felt amazing. They were all so helpful. The welcome party had enough food to hold us down until we could go to the local market place for groceries. I made plans with my cousin and aunt to take us to the stores to get necessities. It was nice to receive to many offers to help us make the cottage feel like home. I was unpacked and settled in by the time the welcome party wrapped up.

The first night was strange. I was awaken by distant laughs. I heard a creeping sound by the window. When I went near the windows the bushes swayed as if someone ran away. I went back to bed and did not disturb Alex who was sound asleep. The following day we went to the local market with Minerva and her mom, my aunt Norma. I confided in them about a possible peeping Tom. Minerva assured me it was probably a nosy local wanting to check out the foreigners. My aunt volunteered to sleep over that night to help us feel safer. After the market, Alex and I met with the contractor for the house project. We had dinner with the contractor and got home late in the evening. Minerva had cooked us dinner and I politely declined. Alex did not want to decline the kind gesture and ate Minerva’s food. They stayed chatting as aunt Norma told me she introduced herself to the neighbors to make sure they were all on friendly terms.

I was awaken around 3am from a presence I sensed. With my eyes closed in bed I pulled closer to Alex. I could hear someone or something breathing very heavily. I peeked my eyes and saw a hairy creature at the foot of the bed. I had tears in my eyes. Alex turned around in bed and the creature was startled, it jumped across the room down the hallway. I ran behind it as it climbed out the window laughing into the field. I closed the window and went to check on Alex. He was sound asleep. I checked on my aunt and cousin and they were asleep as well. Their window was slightly opened in their room too, nervously I closed their window too.

The following day at breakfast I told Alex, Minerva and aunt Norma about the intruder, leaving out the weird monkey features. Alex immediately went to purchase a rifle to the nearest town. Minerva had classes and work, my aunt could not sleep over again because she had work too but askEd the family to try to take time being over. Alex and I were grateful at the help they kindly offered in this twisted situation. Alex and I headed to out to do what we where their for, to help build houses. It was a long day especially for Alex. He had to stay behind reviewing some changes in the blueprints. He did not want me to go home to be alone, so I arranged to go to my grandparents home to spend the evening with them until Alex got home. I had a great time with my grandparents. I told them of the intruder I saw the previous night. My grannie warned me about the witch monkey that has been sighted for years in the countryside. She explained this tale of this witch that transforms to a monkey at night to do her evil biddings. This monkey witch is a woman by day and a monkey at night. You must injure the monkey witch to know her identity. Grannie warned that those who confront the monkey witch never stay the same. I assured my grannie I had no interaction with a witch to cause her or anyone to scare me. I was doubtful of this story she told me. I was put at ease when my grandfather pulled me aside and told me not to mind grannie, for she tends to be superstitious and believes in these urban legends.

My grandparents drove me home as soon as Alex texted me he was on the way home. To my surprise Alex was already home. Minerva was so kind, she stopped by in between her classes and made us dinner, enough even to take for the next day. She had also bought us toiletries that we had forgotten to buy. She also said her mom, aunt Norma was not able to stay the night. I was afraid to stay there without them. I told Minerva to please reconsider staying the night again. She couldn’t because she had a late class and an early shift at work. Alex comforted me by saying we would be okay. Minerva gave me a hug and told me that if her class is over early she would rush back. Alex walked her to the porch, Minerva gave Alex a big hug as well and whispered in his ear something as she giggled with him. Alex looked at me and mouthed “I love you”. He came close to me with a slight smile. I asked what Minerva told him, which he responded that Minerva warned him to take care of me.

Around 4 in the morning I heavily opened my eyes and felt a slight headache. I could not move my legs, arms or scream. I was tied by the foot of my bed and had a gag ball in my mouth. My arms were tied and I could not be set free. I heard the evil sinister laugh again and tears filled my eyes. I pushed myself up as best as I could and saw the back of a hairy thing sitting on top of my husband. I screamed but it was muffled. This thing was full of hair, like a big hairy monkey but it had feminine features. This monster had my husband tied by his hands to the headboard , unconscious and was having sex with him. I banged my feet and and tried to wiggle free. The monkey thing saw me and was enraged. Big black eyes stared at me and growled. I shook myself so hard that I freed myself. I stumbled and searched for the rifle. This creature jumped off the bed towards me. I was so nervous, I could not get the rifle to shoot. Out of desperation I swung the rifle to hit it. I missed it for a few times. When I heard Alex awaken, the thing went back towards him. With new found strength I swung the rifle so hard that it hit this creatures legs. The monkey fell onto the floor in pain. I took another swing and this time the creature let out a cry in a feminine scream. It went dashing out the bedroom. I followed it out the cottage as it limped across the field and climbed a tree. It was howling in pain on a branch until I finally got the rifle and tried to shoot it. I missed but the creature swung from tree to tree until it was gone.

Alex and I did not go back to sleep. We both were shaken by the incident and questioned what creature was this. We decided we could not stay in the cottage, not another night. We called aunt Norma in the morning and she picked us up to take us to her home so we could calm down. When I arrived I asked at what time Minerva gets out of work. My aunt told me Minerva was sleeping for last night she had a fall at school and hurt her legs badly. My heart stopped. I asked if I could see her and my aunt gave me the okay to go to Minerva’s bedroom.

When I opened the door I saw Minerva on her bed with both legs badly bruised. She was moaning in pain. I have heard those moans before. I went to her as she laid in bed and confronted her. “You are a witch monkey, aren’t you?” Minerva turned around and looked at me with dark black similar eyes and let out a sinister laugh. I shook her and asked her why, why did she do this but she kept laughing hysterically. Frustrated, scared and in tears, I ran out the room. Leaving the witch monkey in her human form laughing. When Alex saw me, he asked what happened. I could not let out a word. I kept trying to talk but just moans came out. In tears I stood there as I struggled to speak. I never gained my speech again. I became mute because I discovered the identity of a witch monkey.
